Pterygium information and international destinations
Pterygium, also known as “surfer’s eye” is a growth of tissue on the conjunctiva that can penetrate the cornea inflicting red eyes, itchy, burning feeling, and in some cases, can compromise the vision. Depending on the situation, surgery or eyedrops may be required. This is a same-day procedure.
If the growth bothers you, impairs your vision, or is just for appearance, surgery can be used to remove it. The pterygium will be removed after the doctor uses local anesthesia to numb the area. Following the procedure, you will need to wear an eye patch for two days before you may return to your regular activities the next day.

After surgery
Out of town patients’ follow-ups are scheduled with the ophthalmologist after 1 - 7 days from pterygium surgery. Patients are clear for flying after 1 day from pterygium surgery.
Note: Follow-ups can be arranged as face-to-face or virtually. If needed, you can go to your primary care physician to remove sutures or get medication adjustments.

Can I avoid having a pterygium?
