In vitro fertilization - IVF information and international destinations

In vitro fertilization, also known as IVF, is a process in which one or more eggs are fertilized in a lab setting. Couples or single women who have tried intrauterine insemination or who don't qualify for other treatments are advised to try this procedure.
The mature eggs are removed from the ovary during an IVF process, and the egg and sperm are subsequently fertilized in a lab. The embryos will be put inside the uterus and implanted. In vitro fertilization requires several different processes to complete, which can take several weeks.

Stages for in vitro fertilization

Follicular development
Using ovarian stimulation or follicular development, the ovaries can produce more mature, healthy eggs. The woman will administer hormones for ten to twenty days during this phase. Ultrasound and blood tests are used to continuously monitor the growth.
Egg retrieval
Under low anesthesia, egg retrieval is performed. The specialist extracts the mature eggs using a needle. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to finish this procedure.
Sperm preparation
The specialist will choose the healthiest sperm from the male's semen sample and prepare it for egg fertilization when the man provides a sample of semen following the egg retrieval.
Egg fertilization
The collected egg and sperm are combined in a laboratory (ICSI), each egg is individually injected with the sperm. The eggs are examined to see if they have been fertilized after 16 hours. Six days following fertilization, the embryos will be transferred (blastocyst stage).
Uterine preparation
The woman will start taking hormones before the embryo transfer to get the uterine lining ready for the embryo.
Embryo transfer
The embryos will be prepared for transfer when they reach the blastocyst stage. The embryos are inserted into the uterus during the process by the fertility specialist using a tiny catheter. The age of the woman affects how many embryos will be deposited.
Pregnancy testing
It is advised to get a pregnancy test in the blood or urine two weeks following the embryo transfer. In the weeks that follow, ultrasound scans will be performed if the result is positive.
